The rabbit will literally only get poked by a stone yet it will still fall to the ground squealing, waiting for you to pick up.- You can't jump.- Story dialogue is VERY slow-paced, (2 second breaks in between every sentence).- You can't drive vehicles.- The fire system can be a joke: it's a very very very cool concept (fires don't always light, you have to select a fuel, a fire source (matches, a flare, etc) and tinder to get the fire going. Newspaper burns incredibly easily in real life, yet in game you can still fail to create a fire when using newspaper. It is literally the easiest thing to create a fire using newspaper).- There aren't all that many wildlife threats. [Spoiler warning ahead] There are wolves and bears and moose, wolves and bears are very aggressive but moose will only defend themselves when provoked.- There is a small loading screen before you're able to enter a building.- The story mode is very repetitive, everything you need is strategically placed which breaks immersia. There is very little "effort", at least in episode 1 from what I can see so far. For example, cutting up a big chunk of wood would take you about 20 minutes real time and would spend a small amount of calories and energy.- Weather systems and temperature systems are very good looking and are suited to make you lose temperature faster in storms. Different clothes give you different cold insulation.- I really enjoy the searching mechanic. You have to click and hold to search through objects to find loot and there is a LOT of things to search. Glove boxes, storage containers, crates, wardrobes, bedside tables, tool boxes and more.- The wildlife attack system is fantastic! There is a small slow motion break when you get attacked by an animal, allowing you to choose what you want to use to defend yourself. If you chose a small knife, you will stab the enemy multiple times before it backs off, whereas other weapons like axes hit a lot slower due to the weight. If you chose a revolver to defend yourself, you will hit the enemy 4-5 times with the handle end of the gun before being prompted to "Take Shot" and scare off the animal.- You can choose how long you want to sleep.- If you're waiting for food to cook, you can left click and will be prompted to "pass time until ready", which essentially speeds up time until the food is cooked.- You can find books on your adventures and read them to gain skills in various things.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~It's a very great exploration adventure survival game set in harsh snow conditions. I love it and I recommend it.. Tedious.I picked this up a couple years ago in early access, figured it could only get better with time. Now, it's doomed to haunt my game library for all time, mocking me along with my other ghostly investments. It hit me all at once as I was trudging through the story mode, juggling my over piled inventory and cursing myself for not opting a higher difficulty before investing too much time to start over.Now, I realize the above reason is my own fault, and I'm not holding it against this game at all. In a lot of ways, this game does some stuff right and nails some of the stuff its going after. However, getting it right doesn't necessarily translate to fun. There's a lot of positive reviews out there, a lot with low time investment, and even my own is fairly scant to start criticizing, but I'm going to go ahead and do it anyway.Pros:-Unique: No zombies, cannibals, aliens or other beasties; just you against the Canadian wilderness where only deer, wolves, rabbits and maybe one or two bears exist.-You can scavenge a bunch of goodies from houses, Including several different brands and flavors of soda (Unlike The Forest which only had orange... why is all this orange soda washing up on the beach? Where is it all coming from? Why can't cannibals climb ropes?). Variety's always a plus during the apocalypse-You can wear a total of 4 shirts and 4 pairs of pants to try and keep yourself warm... two pairs of socks and two hats, or scarves, if you're into that (Oddly, only one pair of gloves though).Cons:-Maybe my biggest qualm with this game is how sloooow everything moves. Without proper fuel, just lighting a fire takes something like 10 or 15 seconds, and its cold out there so you light a lot of fires.-Walking is slow, getting around is slow, opening drawers is slow, conversations are slow, cooking is slow; I get the desire for realism, but this game lays it on a little thick.-On normal difficulty, as I learned, this game becomes a winter walking sim where you loot one bedroom houses, sprain your ankles from all the loot you're carrying and chug toilet water whilst occasionally scaring off wolves with flares. Literally.-The story, at least what I saw of it, felt pretty generic; your classic 'Guy Crashes his Pontoon Plane into the Canadian Wilderness trying to Appease his Icy Ex-Wife' skit again.Really, the biggest thing that's missing here, and someone in another review already pointed this out as well, is that this game doesn't have a really strong sense of progression a lot of the good survival games have. Honestly, it just becomes tedious hours of monitoring various bars and pausing what you're doing to sate them, sometimes for long periods if you're freezing and in a bad spot. That sense of accomplishment I get from these kinds of games was missing for me here, that satisfaction of doing things well and becoming stronger. I can't really express where and how, exactly, this went amiss, because I don't really know myself, just that it did in my own opinion.If you can get this game right now for the $7 or so when its on sale, grab it, because it is certainly well worth that much at least. What it does right, it does well, and there is easily entertainment value to be had here... just not $30 worth.. Very good gameBut when will episode 3 release?. The Long Dark is the gold standard by which every other survival game would aspire to be. The player navigates endlessly from quiet and calm isolation to moments of sheer terror and survival. The threat of death to cold, hunger, and wild animals is always in the back of your mind (and sometimes much closer). Yet even as your character struggles there is a peace about the game that brings players to grips with the one true enemy - yourself. One misstep could literally be the beginning of the end in a series of rapidly unfolding events but the reward of each successful step forward is a victory against the unrelenting cold, unending hunger, and thirst which seeks to deprive you of your sanity.Winning is not an achievement. Winning is simply surviving.. I will say if you wanted a hardcore survival game this is it, where you won't have time to look around or your dead if you try to look for things or anything that won't help you survive in this frozen hell. But that my problem with it is that I'd like to look around and find some things to see if there's story or anything that can help but there's no time to look. It's like fire on your skin if you don't put it out now your dead but you don't have a lot things that can put it out beside a oil rag and there's no water, no nothing that can help plus the fire is now reaching your head and the pain is getting worse then you die. That's what this game is all about. So again not bad, it's great for brutal survival but if your here for Open world survival and taking your time. That's not here.. Pros: - immersive experience of deep solitude- detailed survival game play: keep yourself fed, rested and warm- lots of large regions- great weather effects- new content released several times a year- survival sandbox mode, special challenges and even a single player story mode- beautiful sound track and soundscape- developers aim for interesting\/challenging game play vs 100% realism: Your actions have consequences. Certain tools will only last so long; what do you use them for? - not a shooter. There are several weapons, but this is not the focus of the game and never will be.- no zombies! - map items and weather varies, so game play keeps fresh- great weather effects. A blizzard feels like a blizzard!- amazing attention to detail; clothes will weigh you down and get wet. The more you carry, the more rattling noise you'll make. - certain random elements makes for a rewarding exploration experience. I won't spoil it for you.Cons: - no co-op (I wish!)- no matter what you wear, your hands and shirt will always be the same. I want to see my hands wearing my beautiful mittens! Seriously; if you want a survival game that you can sink your teeth in; this is the one for you.
